Wildfires aren’t just a western problem—here in Southern Georgia, dry spells, high winds, and outdoor burning can spark dangerous fires that spread quickly. Even small backyard burns can get out of control in minutes. Knowing the risks, following burn laws, and preparing your home and family can help prevent fires and keep you safe if one starts nearby.

Recognize Warnings, Alerts & Local Burn Restrictions

Understand local thunderstorm risk year-round
- In Georgia, strong storms can occur at any time of day or season—not just summer or afternoon thunderstorms.
- Listen for “When thunder roars, go indoors”—as soon as you hear thunder, you're close enough to be struck.

Stay alert for watches and warnings
- Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Conditions may produce severe weather. Be ready to seek shelter.
- Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Dangerous storm activity is occurring or imminent—move indoors immediately.

Make an Emergency Plan

Plan for quick evacuation
- Identify at least two escape routes from your home and neighborhood.
- Decide where your family will meet if separated. Include a plan for pets and livestock.
- Consider locations you frequent—work, school, daycare—and know their evacuation procedures.

Strengthen Your Home & Yard

Defend against embers and flames
- Keep a 30-foot zone around your home clear of dry leaves, pine straw, and flammable debris.
- Trim branches at least 10 feet away from your roof and chimney.
- Store firewood and propane tanks away from structures.
Prepare for smoky conditions
- Seal windows and doors against smoke intrusion.
- Designate a room you can close off from outside air—use a portable HEPA air cleaner.
- Keep N95 masks on hand for smoke protection if evacuation is not possible.

Outdoor Burning Safety

If you burn, burn smart
- Only burn when authorized by the Georgia Forestry Commission.
- Never burn on windy days—gusts can carry embers far from your burn site.
- Clear a 10-foot bare dirt or gravel zone around your fire.
- Keep a charged garden hose, water bucket, or fire extinguisher within reach.
- Never leave a burn unattended—stay until it’s completely cold to the touch.
